CME, SAMs, ACCENT CE

This activity was planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of the American Association for Clinical Chemistry (AACC) and the Forensic Drug Abuse Advisor. The AACC is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The AACC designates this journal-based CME activity for a maximum of 13.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

The AACC also designates this activity for a maximum of 13.0 ACCENT credit hours. AACC is an approved provider of continuing education for clinical laboratory scientists licensed in, but not limited to, the states of California, Florida, Louisiana, Montana, Nevada, North Dakota, Rhode Island, and West Virginia.

The American Board of Pathology approved Forensic Drug Abuse Advisor as a provider of Self-Assessment Modules (SAMs). SAMs are a very important part of the Maintenance of Certification (MOC) process.

ONE-YEAR SUBSCRIPTION: Subscribers from January-December 2013 can earn up to 13.0 credit hours by successfully completing the program, which is free with a paid subscription (cost $197). The Continuing Education program consists of reading all of the newsletter articles and completing a semi-annual quiz. TARGET AUDIENCE

This activity has been developed to meet the educational needs of physicians, medical examiners, medical review officers, coroners, forensic toxicologists, laboratory technologists/technicians, forensic nurses, and substance abuse professionals.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After reading and studying the articles published in the Forensic Drug Abuse Advisor, the reader should be able to:

Interpret recent new developments in drug-related forensic pathology

Analyze the pitfalls, difficulties, and unique problems associated with postmortem toxicology

Develop increased awareness of the medical consequences of drug abuse

Identify the latest developments in the forensic toxicology of abused drugs

Develop awareness of new techniques and new regulations in workplace drug testing including: hair, urine, sweat, saliva, etc.

Explain new techniques and approaches in forensic drug testing methodology

Explain new techniques and approaches in forensic drug testing methodology

Identify and rank the current trends in drug use in various parts of the country

Define the issues associated with Doping in Sports (Drugs in Sports) including: testosterone, anabolic steroids, erythropoietin, human growth hormones, etc., and the problems of detection

Identify and rank the current trends in drug use in various parts of the country

Evaluate which products are appropriate for use in pre-employment and on-site testing

Identify and explain newly discovered problems with existing testing modalities
